Course Description

The ACCA Qualification is a globally recognised professional accountancy pathway designed for students and professionals who want to build careers in accounting, auditing, taxation, financial management and business.

At CGL, students in Islamabad can prepare for their ACCA examinations through structured classroom teaching, academic guidance, examination preparation and ongoing student support.

The qualification develops knowledge in accounting and finance while progressively building practical, analytical, professional and strategic skills. Students can enter the ACCA journey at an appropriate level depending on their previous academic qualifications and may be eligible for exemptions based on prior studies.

ACCA states that the qualification normally takes around three to four years on average and can involve up to 13 examinations depending on exemptions. Becoming an ACCA member also requires completion of the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and the Practical Experience Requirement.

ACCA also has a worldwide professional network, with members in more than 180 countries, making it a qualification designed for careers that can extend across different sectors and international markets.

Current ACCA Qualification Structure

For students following the current ACCA structure during the 2026–June 2027 transition period, the qualification is organised into three examination levels.

Applied Knowledge

Students begin by developing the fundamental principles of accounting, finance and business.

Papers:

  • Business and Technology (BT)
  • Management Accounting (MA)
  • Financial Accounting (FA)

Successful completion of the Applied Knowledge stage can lead to the ACCA Diploma in Accounting and Business, subject to the applicable ACCA requirements.

Applied Skills

The Applied Skills stage develops practical financial and accounting capabilities.

Papers:

  • Corporate and Business Law (LW)
  • Performance Management (PM)
  • Taxation (TX)
  • Financial Reporting (FR)
  • Audit and Assurance (AA)
  • Financial Management (FM)

These subjects build on the knowledge acquired at the earlier stage and prepare students for more advanced professional-level studies.

Strategic Professional

The Strategic Professional stage develops advanced technical, strategic and professional capabilities.

Essential Papers:

  • Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)
  • Strategic Business Leader (SBL)

Options – choose two:

  • Advanced Financial Management (AFM)
  • Advanced Performance Management (APM)
  • Advanced Taxation (ATX)
  • Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

Students must also complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module and satisfy the Practical Experience Requirement for ACCA membership.

Practical Experience Requirement

ACCA membership is not based on examinations alone. Students must also complete relevant practical experience.

The current requirement includes a minimum of 36 months of relevant work experience together with the required performance objectives, with experience recorded and verified through the ACCA process.

ACCA Qualification Transition

ACCA is introducing a redesigned qualification from 2027.

The future qualification will introduce new Knowledge, Expertise and Strategic Professional stages, together with updated employability modules and examination structures. Students beginning their studies now should therefore receive guidance according to the ACCA transition arrangements applicable to their examination entry dates.

The final sitting of the current Applied Skills and Strategic Professional examinations is scheduled for June 2027, followed by the introduction of the redesigned qualification.

CGL students will be guided according to the ACCA rules and transition arrangements applicable at the time of their registration and examination entry.

Eligibility

ACCA provides different entry routes depending on a student’s previous academic qualifications.

Direct ACCA Qualification Entry

For students in Pakistan, ACCA currently accepts recognised equivalent qualifications, including:

  • Two A Levels together with three GCSE/O Level passes in five separate subjects, including English and Mathematics; or
  • Intermediate / Higher School Certificate with at least 50%, subject to ACCA’s applicable entry requirements; or
  • Other qualifications recognised by ACCA for registration.

ACCA’s official eligibility database should be used to confirm an applicant’s exact eligibility.

Graduate Entry

Graduates with recognised university qualifications may be able to begin the ACCA journey with exemptions for relevant examinations.

The number of exemptions depends on the student’s previous qualification and the subjects studied.

Foundation Route

Students who do not meet the direct ACCA entry requirements may begin through the ACCA Foundation route.

The Foundation Diploma can provide an alternative starting point and, after completion of the relevant requirements, students can progress to the ACCA Qualification with exemptions from the first three ACCA examinations.

ACCA Exemptions

Students with previous accounting, finance or relevant academic qualifications may be entitled to exemptions from certain ACCA examinations.

Exemptions are determined by ACCA based on the student’s qualifications and the applicable exemption database. Students should obtain an official exemption assessment before finalising their study plan.

Duration

The time required to complete ACCA varies from student to student.

Typical pathway

3–4 years on average

The actual duration may be shorter or longer depending on:

  • Previous academic qualifications
  • ACCA exemptions
  • Number of examinations attempted per session
  • Examination results
  • Study schedule
  • Practical experience
  • Individual circumstances

ACCA indicates that the qualification takes around three to four years on average, while relevant work experience can be accumulated alongside studies.
