Course Description

The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a globally recognised professional certification for accounting, finance and business professionals, administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), USA.

CMA Part 1 – Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics

Eligibility

The CMA (USA) is designed for graduates, accounting and finance professionals and individuals seeking advancement in corporate finance and management accounting.

Educational Requirement

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an approved professional certification recognised by IMA.

Professional Experience

Candidates must complete two continuous years of professional experience in management accounting and/or financial management.

The required experience may be completed before passing the examinations or within seven years after passing the CMA examination.

Professional Qualification Route

Candidates holding certain recognised professional accounting qualifications may also be eligible to satisfy the educational requirement, subject to IMA’s applicable rules.

Important

Students may prepare for and take the CMA examinations before completing the required work experience. However, the education and professional-experience requirements must be fulfilled before the CMA certification can be awarded.

CGL recommends that students verify their individual eligibility with IMA before completing their registration.

Duration

The CMA examination consists of two parts, and students can take the two parts in either order.

Many candidates complete both examinations within approximately 12–15 months, depending on their academic background, preparation schedule and examination strategy. IMA states that candidates have a maximum of three years from entry into the CMA program to complete both examination parts.

The overall time required to obtain the CMA designation can be longer if a student still needs to complete the required professional experience.
